Fourth Day in NY_UpperManhanttan&Guggenheim

Columbia University-> Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine-> Riverside Church-> New York Yankee Stadium-> Guggenheim Museum of Modern Art-> Staten Ferry->Chinatown

Today might be the only day of my trip that I am not traveling alone. Since Lucy and I both had a schedule to Guggenheim today, we traveled together today.

We first visited Columbia University on the Upper West side of Manhattan. The campus of Columbia U is much bigger than NYU, though it is still a small campus. After that, we went to visit two cathedrals close to Columbia U. The first one was Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, the biggest Cathedral in the World and the headquarters of the Episcopal of the US. It established on 1892 and hasn’t finished its work yet. And since a big fire on 2003 it is under construction now, which means we cannot visit the entire cathedral as we wished. The second place we visited was Riverside Church. It is well-known because it was established by the donation of John Rockefeller who was also the promoter of Rockefeller Center. But this building was also under construction now, we just walked around it and didn’t visit inside.

Then we went to the Yankee Stadium where I could buy a lot of souvenir about Wang (a pitcher from Taiwan). Since the season didn’t start yet, we just took some picture around the stadium. If you want to visit inside, it will take you $4. In the season time, you might see them practicing in this stadium and met Jeter or other player.

Then we went to Guggenheim Museum by train 4 at 86th station. Guggenheim Museum is well-known by its collections of abstractionism. I enjoy a lot in the painting of abstractionism, especially the painting of Picasso and Dali, which always give me many thoughts about things in a different point of view. They use some simple image to conduct a complex view or exaggerate the reality. And you can just image a lot in their painting because what the painting is depends on your imagination. They are not a real one, just like your imagination. That’s why I love surrealism (which originated from abstractionism) very much.

After two and half hours visiting of Guggenheim, I went to south ferry, the free ferry from Manhattan to Staten Island, which I missed yesterday. I was very worthy to take this ferry because it passed by Liberty Island where Statue of Liberty located very close, but it is free. For me, it is really a bad deal spend 11.50 only for a photo on Statue of Liberty. Especially after 911, you cannot get into the Statue of Liberty because the consideration about safety, how boring it is.

I finally went back home and meet a Taiwanese, Alan. We went to Chinatown and have a dinner together. It is really a happy thing to meet someone from the same country with you in your trip.
